NY Education Department Cancels June Regents Exams

VESTAL, NY (WSKG) - The New York Department of Education has canceled Regents exams for this June. This comes amid concern over COVID-19.

Students who would have taken a Regents exam won’t have to complete that test in order to receive a diploma, assuming they meet certain state guidelines. Those can be found at the New York Education Department web site.

“We are putting the safety of children, families and educators first, while ensuring that the hard work done by our students and teachers is honored," said Board of Regents Chancellor Betty A. Rosa. "These are extraordinary decisions for an unprecedented time, and we thank our school communities for their support and continuing dedication during the statewide school closure."

Andy Pallotta, President of New York State United Teachers, echoed that statement. “This is the right decision that will allow our students and their families to first and foremost focus on being safe and healthy without having to stress about preparing for traditional end-of-year exams this June," he said.

Earlier this week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo extended the order that keeps kids home from school until April 29th.
