ROCHESTER, NY (WXXI) - Wegmans will be supplying face masks to its employees in line with federal guidelines designed to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.
A message postedto the Wegmans website by President & CEO Colleen Wegman says that the company has been following the guidance of the CDC, and most recently, that federal agency is advising that using masks may prevent the spread of the virus.
Wegman says that the supermarket chain has been able to secure enough masks to make it possible for employees to follow that advice. Colleen Wegman’s statement also says that, “As we continue to follow the highest standards for social distancing, sanitation, and plexiglass screens at check out, we are confident in the measures we’ve taken to keep our stores a safe and positive place to be during this time.”
As WXXI News first reported last week, Wegmans recently adopted a new policy that allowed its workers to use protective gear if it makes them feel safer. That announcement came after Monroe County Legislator Rachel Barnhart said that she had heard from dozens of Wegmans employees and their family members, who claim they were told they could not wear personal protective equipment at work.
Wegmans previously also has announced that to thank employees who are working during the pandemic, they are increasing their pay by $2 an hour during March and April.
