BINGHAMTON, NY (WSKG) — The New York State Public High School Athletic Association canceled all 2020 high school spring sports championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As of Monday, nine of 11 sections have put the regular season on hold.
In a press release, NYSPHSAA cited logistical hurdles, including venue availability, and that students are still not back to school. New York schools are closed until May 15, in accordance with Governor Andrew Cuomo's stay-at-home order. Cuomo announced plans to gradually reopen the state, starting with less impacted regions.
"We certainly sympathize with the students, coaches and their school communities, especially the graduating seniors,” Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director, said in a statement.
The canceled championships were scheduled between June 4-13 for boys and girls track & field, boys tennis, softball, baseball, golf and both boys and girls lacrosse.
