Binghamton Looks To Expand Outdoor Space When Restaurant Seating Reopens

BINGHAMTON, NY (WSKG) - The City of Binghamton is changing the way restaurants and taverns can operate once they can reopen for limited dine-in service.

Among the actions Mayor Rich David is pushing are  social distancing guidelinesfor outdoor seating. They would guarantee more space for customers in public areas like parking lots, pedestrian walks and green spaces.

“We need to totally change the way we look at outdoor seating to support Binghamton’s restaurants and encourage social distancing,” David said in a statement.

David also wants the state liquor authority to review regulations for the outdoor service of alcohol.

Binghamton is part of the Southern Tier region which is in phase one of reopening. Restricted dine-in service is part of phase three. David’s office hopes to enter that phase in mid-June.
