NY Mets Retain Binghamton Affiliation

BINGHAMTON, NY (WSKG) - Binghamton Rumble Ponies baseball will remain a minor league affiliate of the New York Mets.

Mets Team President Sandy Alderson made the announcement on Tuesday.

There had been a fear Binghamton would be part of a possible retraction across Minor League Baseball. The New York Daily News reported in November 2019 that MLB planned to eliminate 42 teams in 2021.

Also under threat in that reported plan was the New York-Penn League, which has been in existence since 1939 and has had teams across the Southern Tier over the last several decades.

Binghamton has been the Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets since 1992.

In a statement, Binghamton Mayor Rich David praised the announcement.

“Baseball fans and all City residents should celebrate today’s news," David said. "This is a win for Binghamton.”

The Rumble Ponies season, along with every other team across MiLB, was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic.
