Governor Allows Weddings Next Month, New York City Reopens Dining On Valentine's Day

NEW YORK NOW - New York will begin allowing weddings of up to 150 people in mid-March and patrons in New York City will be allowed to dine indoors in about two weeks, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday as the state’s COVID-19 numbers continue to trend downward.

The state will also be setting up a mass vaccination site at Yankee Stadium, Cuomo said, which will be reserved exclusively for residents of the Bronx.

“The post-Holiday surge reduction continues,” Cuomo says. “Experts say the trend for New York should continue to drop.”

Indoor dining in New York City will be allowed to resume at 25% capacity starting on Valentine’s Day, February 14. It’s the first time indoor dining will be allowed in the five boroughs in more than a month, when the virus spiked statewide.

And if you’re lucky enough to get engaged over a COVID-era dinner date, you’ll be able to get married as early as March 15.

Weddings of up to 150 people will be allowed, Cuomo said. But those events have to be approved by local health officials, and attendees will have to test negative for the virus immediately before the wedding. Specific regulations are forthcoming.

And after a report from THE CITY, a nonprofit news publication, found that people were traveling from outside New York City to a vaccine site in Washington Heights, home to a large Hispanic population, the state is now setting up a new mass vaccine site at Yankee Stadium.

Yankee Stadium, located in the Bronx, will be reserved exclusively for residents of the borough, which also has a predominantly Black and Latinx population.

As of Thursday, the latest data available, 8,357 people were still hospitalized with the virus, a decrease of 163 from the day before. There were 151 new deaths.
