Broome Co. Wind Project Construction Continuing Through Summer

ENDWELL, NY (WSKG) — The New York siting board gave the go-ahead for Northland Power to move forward with its next phase of construction on its wind farm project in eastern Broome County.

Over the summer, crews will work to establish access roads, lay electrical components and construct concrete pads for the 27-turbine Bluestone Wind project in the Towns of Windsor and Sanford.

“Our goal this year is to complete as much of the project as we can before the winter hits,” Chris Stanton, manager of the project, told WSKG.

The actual turbines themselves are scheduled to be erected during the summer of 2022.

Once finished, the wind farm could generate as much as 124 megawatt hours of electricity each day for the region— enough to power several thousand homes. While the project will include some capacity to store energy, that figure will fluctuate somewhat depending on the weather.

The project is moving forward despite opposition from Broome County Concerned Residents and the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society. A judge did not grant an injunction to stop the project in a lawsuit challenging the state’s Article 10 siting process used to approve the wind farm in March.
