ROCHESTER, NY (WXXI) - New York State Thruway Authority officials say they'll start to modernize many of the service areas along the Thruway later this month. It's part of an overall $450 million project to renovate all 27 service areas.

On July 29, ten service areas will close to start work on the first phase of the project. Among the service areas to close later this month are the Clifton Springs, Pembroke and Junius Ponds service plazas. Fuel services will remain available at all locations during construction.

When the work is completed, Thruway Authority officials say a collection of new restaurants will be available at various locations including Shake Shack, Panera, Popeyes, Chick-fil-A and Panda Express.

Next year, work will continue on six additional service areas. Phase two includes 11 service areas with renovations expected to begin in 2023.

The project is being funded through a public-private partnership and officials say no toll dollars or state tax dollars are being used.
