BINGHAMTON, NY (WSKG) — Broome County Sheriff Capt. Kathleen Newcomb posted her political intentions on Twitter Monday, inviting people to attend an event on September 18 where she plans to announce she is running for Broome County Sheriff.
Newcomb started with the department in 1992 and now is its third ranking member. She is a part of the Broome County Police Review Taskforce, which was formed following New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's push for police reform across the state.
Current Sheriff David Harder announced he plans to retire at the end of this term.
Newcomb faces State Senator Fred Akshar (NY-52) for the position. The former undersheriff announced his candidacy in early June. He has since received endorsements from the sheriffs for Tioga, Chenango and Delaware Counties.
Harder has not yet endorsed any candidate in the race.
