ITHACA, NY (WSKG) – Recycling and trash fees in Tompkins County may go up in 2020. It’s part of the proposed county budget which was made public on Tuesday.
The fee would go up by $2-per-year to $60-per-household. The rise is due to losses in recycling revenue and increases in the cost of county-wide collection contracts.
County Administrator Jason Molino said the money made from selling recyclables has gone down by 50 percent in recent years. The changes in the commodity prices are due to partly to a change in China’s policies. In 2018, China stopped taking most plastics from the United States.
The Recycling and Materials Management Department expects to end this year with a deficit of four hundred thousand dollars.
A public forum about the budget is scheduled for early October.
