NWS In Binghamton Forecasts Flood Conditions Will Not Worsen

VESTAL, NY (WSKG)— Recent heavy rains have led to flash flooding in parts of the Southern Tier and Northern Pennsylvania including in Seneca and Bradford counties.

Joanne LaBounty is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Binghamton. She says in 2006 and 2011, the river’s main stem points in Conklin, Vestal, and Owego reached major flood stage and impacted larger areas. Today, flooding is happening in smaller creeks and streams.

"So it’s a lot more localized to maybe particular streets and neighborhoods and not area-wide like those other floods," explained LaBounty.

According to LaBounty, smaller creeks and streams seem to go up quickly but come down quickly too.

By Tuesday afternoon, rain seemed to be slowing, with sunny skies Wednesday morning.

"It looks like most of it will be east of the area that already saw the heaviest rain this morning, and it looks like, hopefully, it wont sit over the same area for a long period of time like it did earlier," LaBounty said.

She predicted conditions will not worsen, but there will likely be ongoing road closures.

Flooded roadways may drain but remain closed due to damage, and water may sit in yards a while because the ground is saturated and simply can’t absorb more.
