VESTAL, NY (WSKG) - Voters in the Owego Apalachin School District overwhelmingly approved a revised budget on Tuesday, about a month after the first budget proposalwas voted down.
The new budget proposal passed 1281-786 votes. The first proposal failed by about a hundred votes. Voter turnout this time around was nearly twice the turnout last month.
The new budget cuts the property tax levy by one percent, to 2.83 percent.
School administrators had hoped that would make the budget more appealing, but it's not the only reason. They blame published misinformation, which led voters to mistakenly believe the district planned to exceed the state property tax cap. It did not.
Generally, the property tax cap requires schools to keep the levy at two percent or at the rate of inflation, whichever is lower.
