Rep. Brindisi Pushes Senate To Act On Gun Reform, Denies Flipping On Position

Brindisi Mass Shootings - spot

VESTAL, NY (WSKG) - In the wake of mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio this weekend that left dozens of people dead and injured, New York 22nd District Congressman Anthony Brindisi, a democrat, is calling out congressional leadership for inaction on gun reform.

Brindisi supports tougher background checks. He wants the Senate to return Washington to vote on a bill that has already passed the house.

The bill would prohibit firearm transfers between private parties unless a gun dealer, importer or manufacturer first takes possession of the weapon and runs a background check.

Brindisi said background checks have the approval of the American public. Several national polls show that's true.

“That seems like a common sense area that 90-percent of Americans can agree on," Brindisi said. "But we’re not doing it right now because Mitch McConnell won’t bring the bill up for a vote.”

Mitch McConnell is the Republican Senate Majority Leader and would have the power to call Senators back to vote.

Brindisi denied that his view on gun reform has changed. Even though, he voted against New York’s SAFE Act in 2013. That law expands background checks, but also outlaws certain weapons and limits weapon capacity.

"My only concern is that we're not turning law-abiding gun owners into criminals overnight," Brindisi said. He added that Congress needs to look at legislation that keeps guns out of the hands of criminals without infringing on second amendment rights.
