Find out more about WSKG by visiting https://www.wskg.org and searching “local content report.” WSKG is an equal opportunity provider and employer.Job DescriptionThe Reporter/Producer is responsible producing balanced and engaging news and public affairs content on issues of local and regional interest for broadcast on radio, television and web platforms in fulfillment of the station’s mission and in adherence with high journalistic and ethical standards. In this position, you will report to the Director of News and Public Affairs Content, and:

  • Use investigative techniques to gather, analyze, interpret and report news, producing written stories, features, enterprise reports, and spots for news and public affairs programing.
  • Generate and develop ideas for story and program origination, working both independently and collaboratively with other reporters and producers.
  • Compose content and edit for accuracy, timeliness and proper usage.
  • Cultivate diverse sources, including under-represented segments of the population.
  • Contribute to roundtable discussions, broadcast and multimedia talk shows, interviews and community engagement discussions of news and public affairs issues.
  • Post content on WSKG.ORG, NPR1, and on social media
  • Live host news programming, as needed; arrange and present newscasts, billboards, and regular station breaks.
  • Operate own audio board as well as computers, recording devices and other equipment as necessary.
  • Assist with other productions as assigned, including in-studio or field records for radio, television, and online media.
  • Participate in WSKG fundraising activities.
  • Professionally represent WSKG in the community.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Must Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field with specialized training in public media journalism, or equivalent experience
  • At least two years of professional reporting experience and one year of radio broadcasting experience
  • Expertise in voice delivery and writing for the ear

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated competence with digital and social media tools and an advanced understanding of digital and social media concepts
  • Familiarity with issues affecting upstate New York, especially the Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, and Leatherstocking regions
  • Familiarity with Public Broadcasting’s national programming services (PBS, NPR, PRI, etc.)
