Resciniti secures Republican nomination for Binghamton Assembly district race

Binghamton City Councilwoman Sophia Resciniti won Tuesday’s Republican primary for the 123rd Assembly District covering Binghamton, Johnson City, Endicott and Vestal.

Resciniti carried 55 percent of the vote, beating out her opponent, Robin Alpaugh, by around 19 percentage points, or 900 votes.

"It's been very fulfilling and I feel so grateful,” Resciniti said as her victory became clear Tuesday night. “It's been a lot of conversations in people's living rooms, a lot of conversations in their homes and to me that is just priceless."

Resciniti, a former Binghamton University lecturer and certified social worker, said connecting with voters in the district will continue to be a cornerstone of her strategy moving into the general election in November.

"We keep working,” Resciniti said. “We keep doing what we know how to do, or what I know how to do, which is what I did when I ran for city council or what I did while running for this primary. And that is knock on doors, talk to people, listen to their struggles, their fears, their worries or whatever it might be, and support them, take their message to Albany."

Alpaugh, a staffer for State Senator Fred Akshar (R-52), said he accepts the results and will continue serving the community moving forward.

"I'm going to get up tomorrow morning and I'm going to do something good for our community, either through Rotary or for Spiedie Fest and go back to work in the office and it's going to be another day,” Alpaugh said.

Resciniti will face 10-term incumbent Democratic Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo (D-123) in the November general election.
