Schools Cope With More Computer Glitches On State Tests

ROCHESTER, NY (WXXI) - New York state education officials and school districts around the state are dealing with technical issues involving English Language Arts exams that were given by computer to students on Tuesday in grades 3-8.

A similar problem happened a year ago.

A spokesman for the statewide teachers' union, NYSUT, said their organization was getting calls from districts across the state, including in the Rochester area.

The New York State Education Department issued a statement on Tuesday afternoon saying that because of the technical problems, there will be no computer based testing on Wednesday.  The state says it expects “seamless administration” of that program and it says it will use the time to work with Questar, the vendor that supplies the software, to make sure the system is operating smoothly when the computer based testing resumes.

State education officials say that they will also work with schools to provide guidance on how to resolve outstanding issues.

Questar told the state that more than 84,000 testing sessions were submitted on Tuesday and that the company has dispatched additional staff around the state to provide technical help to schools.
