Science Pub | Predicting Marital Success

Predicting Marital Success

Matthew D. Johnson, PhD

What better topic to explore in February than the scientific mysteries of love. Why does one relationship last a lifetime while another fizzles? For 20 years, Dr. Johnson and his team have been unraveling these mysteries and discovering some surprising clues. Join us for a talk that will open your eyes –– and your heart –– to the many ways we can support (or sabotage) the relationships we treasure most.

Dr. Matthew Johnson, Professor of Psychology at Binghamton University, conducts clinical research examining the developmental course of marital and family dysfunction. Extensions of his research include programs designed to prevent marital distress; insights on genetic and hormonal influences on marital behavior; and the prevention of intimate partner violence.

This talk was recorded on February 9, 2021.

In his 2016 book, Great Myths of Intimate Relationships: Dating, Sex, and Marriage, Johnson begins by asking a question: "Overall, how satisfied are you with your life?" He poses the question because the best way to predict the answer to this question is to answer a different question: Overall, how satisfied are you with your current intimate relationship? Predicting the answer to the second question has been Johnson's

research focus for his entire career. In the February 2020 Science Pub Bing Talk, Johnson will summarize what he has learned about marriage and other intimate relationships over the course of his 20 years at Binghamton University.
