Police said 57-year-old Michael DeCastro entered the police department and when an officer came out to speak with him DeCastro attacked the officer with a knife with a nine-inch blade. The Police Department reported the incident took 20-25 seconds.

DeCastro was a resident of Ithaca. Police said the attack appears to have been random and that the specific officer was not targeted.

The officer involved was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for injuries in the attack. He was released later on Saturday. The police department has not identified the officer.

The state police are conducting an investigation into the incident.
