Corning Community College Celebrates 60 Years with Poetry and Music

The Cantata Singers and the Corning Community College Vocal Ensemble join forces for a concert celebrating 60 years of Corning  Community College with poetry of Edward Dougherty set to music by conductor Will Wickham, who joins us to talk about this free concert at the Corning Museum of Glass Auditorium.

The Cantata Singers Perform in Sayre

The Cantata Singers of Elmira perform music by Breesport native Dan Forrest at the Church of the Redeemer in Sayre. Conductor Will Wickham and Cantata Singers president Sally Davis join us to talk about Forrest’s music and his deep roots in the Elmira area. We also learn a bit of the history of the Cantata Singers.

The Cantata Singers of Elmira Present Jenkins' 'Requiem' and 'Cantata Memoria'

The Cantata Singers of Elmira, as part of the Music at Grace series, is presenting two works by Sir Karl Jenkins, ‘Requiem’ and ‘Cantata Memoria; For the Children of Abervan’ on Sunday, February 26 at 4pm in Grace Episcopal Church, 375 W. Church Street in Elmira.  Music Director Will Wickham talks about the tragedy that prompted the Cantata, and the music that memorializes it.

Music From Elizabethan England is Performed in Two Concerts

The Cantata Singers of Elmira perform selections from the 1601 book of madrigals, ‘The Triumphs of Oriana’, a collection of music by various contemporary composers written in honor of Queen Elizabeth I. Conductor Will Wickham talks about the music and the history behind the collection. The Cantata Singers present the concert in two performances this weekend.

Karl Jenkins' 'The Armed Man — A Mass for Peace' is Performed in Horseheads

Karl Jenkins’ ‘The Armed Man — A Mass for Peace’ was written only 16 years ago, and yet it is performed regularly, which is unusual for a contemporary  work that is so musically challenging. The Cantata Singers of Elmira are presenting it on Sunday, February 28 at 3pm in the First United Methodist Church in Horseheads. As we hear from conductor Will Wickham and chorister Susan Nagle, the challenges are emotional as well.

The Cantata Singers of Elmira and Corning Community College present "Where Sacred Waters Divide"

Conductor Will Wickham leads the Cantata Singers in Where Sacred Waters Divide. Corning Community College presents this  collaborative, original work of art, with performances on Sunday, March 8 at 3:00 p.m. and Thursday, March 12 at 12:15 p.m. in the Concert Hall (R004) in the Learning Center at the College’s Spencer Hill Campus. As part of the Year of Water, the College has commissioned a program of original music and poetry focusing on the theme of water in our southern Finger Lakes area. Created by CCC faculty, this program will be performed in partnership with CCC Performing Ensembles and the Cantata Singers.

A weekend of Bach with the Cantata Singers

Bill Cowdery and Will Wickham speaks with WSKG’s Bill Snyder about the two concerts featuring JS Bach’s Mass in b minor. It’s a reunion concert of the Cantata Singers, bringing back many former members of the group, and there’s also a talk about the work and the previous works that Bach “recycled” into the Mass.
