“For the taxpayers, this is going to help fund a lot of their municipalities’ costs in recovering this material.”
“You can recycle your Christmas tree in January and then pick it back up as compost in April.”
The vote was 7-1.
According to the resolution, residents have expressed concerns about potential negative impacts of pollution and truck traffic from the facility on tourism, agriculture, and human health.
Critics of the facility have called it an incinerator. Under regulatory definitions set by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), it’s not.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, between 2009 and 2017 lithium-ion batteries were the “root cause” of at least 195 fires.
“Common sources of contamination include plastic bags, Styrofoam, padded envelopes, coffee cups, and cigarette butts.”
To turn ethane into the building block of plastic, petrochemical companies are investing in ethane cracker plants, raising concerns about what these facilities could mean for air pollution and climate change.
City sanitation crews will not pick up residents’ recycling if the bin contains a plastic bag.
