SciGirls Strategies Live Stream

A quarter of a century of studies have converged on a set of common strategies that work, and they have become the framework for SciGirls. SciGirls conducted a literature review, funded by the National Science Foundation, to update the strategies with the latest gender equitable and culturally responsive research. STEAMfest 2018 brings together afterschool/out-of-school-time providers, makers, business and industry to highlight Science, Technology, Engineering Art/Agriculture and Math career pathways for young people and innovation throughout our region. STEAMfest 2018 features a huge variety of fun, interactive “maker” stations where young people can learn about exciting STEAM careers through hands-on activities and learn what they need to study in school and college to prepare for these careers. STEAMfest will be held Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Oakdale Mall, Johnson City, NY. Be sure to visit the WSKG station featuring a Bob the Builder inspired activity! This is a free event open to the public.

Southern Tier Math Conference

Join WSKG at this free conference for PK-12 teachers.  We’ll be featuring resources from our very own Good to Know series and math materials from PBS LearningMedia. Attendees can also learn about the new ‘Text-to-Teacher’ project from Cyberchase! Thursday, March 15, 2018 at Chenango Valley High School in Binghamton, NY. The Conference will run 4:15pm-7:15pm.

A day for celebrating Hal and his favorite chew toy Mr. Chewinsky’s three-year anniversary as dog and toy has gone from joyous fun to total sadness as Nature Cat has made a terrible mistake! Nature Cat accidentally dropped Mr. Chewinsky down the storm drain, and now he is floating on the storm water, working his way through the drain system to the river and out to the ocean! Oh no! As the gang goes to find and save Mr. Chewinsky, they learn how all waterways are connected, and also meet up with a new special friend named Nature Dog, who helps them navigate the oceans. Will they find Mr. Chewinsky?

Swing Into Spring with Curious George

You know it must be springtime if a curious monkey named George is dancing on the balcony at sunrise! The Man with the Yellow Hat is sure that George has spring fever, and he takes George to the park to experience all the wonders of spring. George is so excited about spring that he wants Hundley to have spring fever, too, but Hundley and the Doorman are busy trying to win the Mayor’s spring cleaning prize. When a broken water pipe floods the building, Hundley has to stay with George in the country, and George tries to make sure Hundley enjoys spring, too. Even blooming flowers, baby animals and a canoe ride can’t make Hundley love spring. What’s worse – Hundley gets lost in the country!

The new season of Bob the Builder starts on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 7:00am on WSKG Create. Grab your tool belt and hardhat! Join Bob the Builder and his team as they construct projects using a foundation of determination and teamwork. With his business partner Wendy, apprentice builder Leo, and a team of machines, Bob is ready to fix the town of Fixham along with Spring City. This team digs into any project, hammering out solutions to problems, all while building confidence along the way.

You can also check out our Bob the Builder inspired holiday tree at Roberson Museum and Science Center during the annual ‘Home for the Holidays’ exhibit.

Some objects are heavy and some are light! In this clip from Bob the Builder, Tiny estimates the weight of different objects he lifts with his crane. Watch the clip with your students and then experiment by testing heavy and light items. Catch New Episodes of 'Ready Jet Go!' All Week

Blast off to adventure with a week of all-new episodes of Ready Jet Go! Monday, August 15, 2016 through Friday, August 19, 2016 at 7:30am and 4:00pm on WSKG TV. An alien family with vastly superior technology is traveling across the galaxy on assignment; the parents are travel writers. They pick up a radio signal of a catchy 1950s rock’n’roll song called “Jet Propulsion” that leads them to Earth, which they find to be a first-rate planet: lush and beautiful, worthy of staying awhile and writing up several travel articles. They morph into human shape, call themselves the Propulsion family, and name their kid JET, thinking it a “typical Earth name.” When their flying saucer morphs into the shape of a house and lands in a vacant lot, two kids witness the event: neighbors SEAN and SYDNEY.

Celebrate the Outdoors with 'Cyberchase' Activities

WSKG celebrates the environment with Cyberchase!  Our Cyberchase pick of the week is this online collection of nature-themed activities that are low-cost/no-cost and easy to replicate at home or in the classroom. For Real segment: While visiting his friend at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Harry learns about sustainability, like recycling fabrics in clothes to reducing plastic waste by using reusable water bottles.

We think that by working together, we can combine powerful media and innovative education practices to inspire students to pursue careers in discovery and innovation. The Science Friday Initiative is conducting a nationwide search for creative, highly motivated, and dedicated STEM educators to participate in the collaborative development of new multimedia-driven education resources.

In this one-hour launch special, Jet and friends take a trip to the Moon to learn about asteroids, find out how living on the Moon is different than living on Earth, explore the moon’s phases and have a backyard sleepover under the starry sky.

On the night of February 3, 1995, the dark skies around Kennedy Space Center in Florida light up as the space shuttle Discovery lifted off on its 20th mission to outer space. The launch represented an historic moment for NASA and the space program; it was the first Space Shuttle mission piloted by a female astronaut – Eileen Collins. Today’s throwback Thursday photograph shows Collins at the pilot’s station during that historic flight. https://youtu.be/4-_rwxr3ygE

Lt. Col. Collins was born in Elmira, New York where she attended Elmira Free Academy. Collins had a very successful career with the Air Force and NASA, logging over 872 hours in space. In 1999, she made another historic flight as the first female commander of a U.S. spacecraft, and retired from NASA in 2006.

Nature Cat Special

Nature Cat is a new animated PBS KIDS series designed to encourage kids to explore and develop connections with the natural world. With broad comedic appeal and a focus on natural sciences, the show follows Fred, a house cat who dreams of exploring the great outdoors.  Once his family leaves for the day, Fred transforms into Nature Cat, a “backyard explorer extraordinaire!” Nature Cat can’t wait to get outside for a day of backyard nature excursions and bravery, but there’s one problem: he’s still a house cat with no instincts for nature! ‘We Need All Hands On Deck’: Michelle Lee Talks Women In Science

When President Obama named Michelle Lee as Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, she became the first woman to hold that position in the agency’s 225-year history. Now Lee is working to make sure she’s not an anomaly. She wants to bring more women and minorities into STEM careers. Jenna Flanagan recently met up with Director Lee in New York City.
