Harmful algal blooms can cause a variety of health concerns, from mild rashes to severe illness. The problem is particularly bad in the Finger Lakes region.

The extension runs through March 31, 2024 and will automatically renew unless one of the parties decides not to renew it or if a new gaming compact is agreed upon.

"We had a lot of big storms, a lot of rain during July and so that could have caused nutrients to essentially enter the lake and help facilitate these blooms."
