Carl Heastie says he wants a court to allow redistricting commission to redraw the Assembly and congressional maps.

A court will decide how to redraw state Assembly districts for 2024 elections.

A recent study found New York’s over 120 billionaires increased their wealth by $88 billion dollars during the pandemic.

"I feel much more comfortable about that scenario than I would around rushed budget negotiations that would be based off of the Governor's position."

The Assembly Leader said it would be ideal to approve tax hikes on the rich before the start of the year instead of waiting to address the issue as part of the state budget in March.

“If you take people who are highly mobile, and you tax them, well then, they’ll just move next door. Where the tax treatment is simpler.”

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, the first African-American to hold that title, has long supported the repeal of the provision, but it has long languished in the legislature.

“None of us can fathom 20% cuts to education. Those are cuts that I don’t think we’ve ever imagined, we’ve ever seen, in recent times."

“You need real data, real information, not cherry – picked stories and sensationalized events to try to paint a picture as to whether the law is working or not."

The Assembly Speaker said it’s a better choice than “cutting health care or denying health care” to New Yorkers.
