The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) program, called 287g, enlists local law enforcement agencies to assist in immigration enforcement. Only two other counties in New York participate in any part of the program.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials arrested at least one person while in Ithaca Thursday. In a statement, the acting U.S. deputy attorney general condemned the area’s “sanctuary” immigration policies.

Their main objection is the addition of a customs building and one customs inspector. Customs is part of the federal Customs and Border Protection, an agency of the Department of Homeland Security.
