Central New York Rep. John Katko (R-Camillus) announced Friday that he will not seek reelection in 2022, leaving Congress after first being elected in 2014.

The Department of Homeland Security said that the closure extension–which applies to the southern border as well–was partially motivated by the desire to minimize the spread of the highly contagious delta variant.

“To allow the president of the United States to incite this attack without consequence is a direct threat to the future of our democracy."

Both candidates believe their opponents lead is too large to overcome.

Hanna served part of the central New York, the Mohawk Valley and the Southern Tier.

The vote went along party lines.
