A federal judge threw out the National Rifle Association's bid to declare bankruptcy Tuesday, allowing New York to proceed in its effort to dissolve the gun rights group for alleged "fraud and abuse."

The organization had filed for bankruptcy and said it would reincorporate in Texas.

New York's attorney general announced civil action to dissolve the National Rifle Association after an investigation found millions of dollars in alleged fraud by CEO Wayne LaPierre and others.

Gun control groups say the National Rifle Association has been "distracted" by recent investigations, financial troubles and turnover. But the organization clearly still holds sway in Washington, D.C.

The gun rights group faces pressure to address allegations of financial mismanagement. The New York attorney general is investigating and the president said it needs to "get its act together quickly."

Attorney General Letitia James' announcement came shortly after the president of the gun rights group, Oliver North, said he would not seek a second term.

The NRA is suing the Cuomo Administration over a decision to end the sale of liability insurance for gun owners because it’s illegal under state laws. In rural parts of New York residents have their own view.
