While Many Democrats Now Endorse Impeachment Inquiry, Rep. Brindisi Holds Off

Updated: 9/25/19 - 10:57 A.M.

VESTAL, NY (WSKG) - While Democrats in Congress are moving forward with an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, New York 22nd District Congressman Anthony Brindisi wants more information.

The 22nd district covers part of the Southern Tier and central New York including Binghamton, Norwich and Utica.

Several members of Congress joined the push for impeachment after a whistleblower report that President Trump linked domestic politics to foreign aid.  In a conversation with Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump allegedly asked for dirt on the son of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

In a series of tweets Tuesday, Brindisi called alleged actions concerning. "The thought that any government official, especially our Commander-in-chief, would hold up foreign aid to an ally and suggest they investigate a political opponent, is a grave and troubling accusation," Brindisi continued. "It is clear that this Administration needs to provide answers."

The Democrat said he wants to see a transcript of Trump’s conversation, the full whistleblower complaint and the inspector general’s determination on the issue.

Since those comments, a summary of the call between Trump and Zelensky has been released which shows Trump asked Zelensky to contact Attorney General William Barr with information about Biden's son.*

"We cannot play politics with our national security," Brindisi said "We need to know the facts to fulfill our Constitutional duty."

Brindisi is in a swing district ahead of the 2020 election. He's in his first term, narrowly beating out Republican incumbent Claudia Tenney in 2018.
