VESTAL, NY (WSKG) — As the calendar moves into colder months, natural gas customers should know how to spot a leak and what to do if a leak is suspected.
According to NYSEG there are three ways to identify a leak: by smell, by sound, or by sight.
Natural gas is odorless. A sulfur-like odor is added, making it smell like rotten eggs when there’s a leak.
When natural gas is escaping from a pipe, it may cause a roaring, hissing, or whistling sound.
Clouds of blowing dust or white mist, fog, or bubbles in standing water are all signs of a leak. Customers may also notice vegetation dying for no reason.
If you suspect a leak, go to a safe place and call 911.
